Dong Yoon Chae is a foreign attorney at Kim & Chang, where he focuses his practice on international IP disputes, arbitration and cross-border litigation, and anti-corruption and corporate compliance matters. Mr. Chae handles numerous complex eDiscovery matters for Korean corporations in US litigation and government investigations, often leading K&C’s highly skilled team of attorneys and technical experts to conduct discovery in a cost-effective and defensible manner. He also advises multinational corporations and Korean conglomerates on artificial intelligence, privacy and data security, and various other regulatory and legal issues in the life sciences and healthcare industry, as well as the technology, media, and telecommunications industry.
Prior to joining Kim & Chang, Mr. Chae worked in Baker McKenzie’s Dallas and San Francisco offices as a partner (Associate, 2012-2021; Partner, 2022-2023), where he litigated complex IP disputes, representing numerous multinational corporations in front of the Federal Circuit, International Trade Commission, Court of Federal Claims, Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and various federal district courts. He regularly advised clients on patent prosecution, trade secrets, and other IP and technology matters. He was the first law firm Fellow at the World Economic Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where he researched ways to maximize societal benefits from the use of AI. He also served as a Fellow for Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (2022) and as an Associate in the Honorable Barbara M. G. Lynn American Inn of Court (2018-2020).
Mr. Chae is recognized as a legal expert on IP and regulatory issues relating to artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. He has published over 25 articles on diverse topics, including “Artificial Intelligence Collides with Patent Law” (cited over 160 times) and “U.S. AI Regulation: Legislative Overview and Practical Considerations” (cited over 50 times). He is also a sought-after speaker on such topics and has presented at many events, including those hosted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Stanford Law School, American Bar Association, and California Lawyers Association, to name a few.
Mr. Chae was named as a Thomson Reuters Stand-out Lawyer (2025), and during his practice in the U.S., was selected to The Best Lawyers in America for Patent Litigation and IP Litigation (2022-2023), The Best Lawyers in America Ones to Watch for IP Law, IP Litigation, and Patent Litigation (2021-2022), and Texas Rising Star by Texas Super Lawyers for IP Litigation (2018-2023). Mr. Chae received his JD from University of Michigan Law School in 2012 and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009. He is admitted to the New York Bar and the Texas Bar. He is also licensed to practice in front of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
