Hye Sung Kim is an attorney in Kim & Chang's International Arbitration & Cross-Border Litigation Practice and ESG Practice. Ms. Kim represents both domestic and international clients in various cross-border disputes and has extensive experience in cross-border litigations, and international arbitration cases administered by ICC, LCIA, LMAA, SIAC, KCAB and AAA.

Her recent work includes representing world’s leading companies and Korean companies in multinational disputes in litigation and arbitration involving China, Korea, Japan, UK, US, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Australia, Italy and Canada. The disputed matters include issues related to construction, sales, insurance, reinsurance, shipbuilding, hedge trading and intellectual property.

Ms. Kim has been recognized by several leading legal directories, including Asialaw Leading Lawyers, where she was named ”Leading Lawyer” for 2022, Chambers Global, as well as Chambers Asia-Pacific, where she was named “Leading Individual” in Arbitration for 2022. Additionally, the Independently Rated Lawyers listed her as a “Stand-out Lawyer” for 2022. Also, the Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific named Ms. Kim as a "Future Star" in Commercial and Transactions as well as in International Arbitration for five consecutive years since 2018, and the Legal 500 Asia Pacific listed her as a "Next Generation Lawyer" in International Arbitration for two consecutive years since 2017.

Ms. Kim received an LL.M. from London School of Economics and Political Science in 2017, and she graduated from the Judicial Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court of Korea in 2010. She received an LL.B. from Seoul National University College of Law in 2008. She is admitted to the Korea bar (2010) and is admitted to practice in England & Wales (2018).

International Disputes
 
  •   Represented Korean IT companies against Chinese companies in ICC and SIAC arbitrations with anti-arbitration/anti-suit injunction in relation to licensing disputes. 
  •   Represented a Japanese manufacturing company against a Korean company in ad-hoc arbitration under Korean law in relation to a power plant dispute in Bangladesh. 
  •   Represented a Korean contractor against Bangladesh companies in ICC arbitration in relation to power plant disputes in Bangladesh. 
  •   Represented Korean shipbuilding companies against European companies in LMAA arbitrations in relation to the semi-submersible rigs building disputes. 
  •   Represented the Korean Government against Dutch subsidiaries of a UAE state-owned company in ICSID arbitration filed under the Korea-Netherlands BIT in relation to international taxation. 
  •   Represented a Canadian company against Korean companies in Korean litigation/ad-hoc arbitration under Korean law in relation to power plant disputes in Korea. 
  •   Represented a Korean train manufacturer against a Taiwanese authority in ad-hoc arbitration under Taiwanese law in relation to a dispute in Taiwan. 
  •   Represented a Korean contractor against an Italian subcontractor in KCAB arbitration in relation to a dispute that arose from the Iran sanctions. 
  •   Represented a Korean manufacturer against a US contractor in AAA arbitration in relation to the jack-up rig building dispute in China.  
  •   Advised Korean investors in relation to joint venture disputes in China involving CIETAC arbitration. 
  •   Advised a French vehicle supplier against a Korean company involving KCAB mediation. 
  •   Regularly advises international and Korean clients in relation to dispute resolution strategies involving ICC, LCIA, SIAC, SCMA, KCAB, CIETAC, HKIAC, JCAA, and AAA arbitration, as well as Korean dispute resolution procedures in support of arbitration.
