Sungjean Seo is a senior member of Kim & Chang’s International Arbitration & Cross-Border Litigation Practice and Construction & Engineering Disputes Practice. 

Ms. Seo specializes in international commercial arbitration, representing Korean and international clients in arbitrations conducted under the rules of the ICC, LCIA, LMAA, ICDR, and KCAB, as well as in ad hoc arbitrations. She has experience in complex disputes arising out of a range of commercial contexts including joint ventures, distributorship relationships, and intellectual property. In recent years, Ms. Seo has concentrated her practice representing clients in the construction, power projects and shipbuilding sectors, in arbitrations seated in London, Paris, and Seoul. She also regularly advises clients in connection with cross-border litigation. 

Before joining Kim & Chang, Ms. Seo practiced for several years with leading firms in New York, concentrating in the areas of complex cross-border finance and securities offerings. She also taught at the Michigan State University College of Law and at the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University, Korea. 

Ms. Seo received her J.D. from the School of Law at Columbia University where she served as head articles editor of the Human Rights Law Review. She is a member of the bar of the State of New York and speaks Korean and English.

  •   Represented a major Japanese manufacturer in a KCAB arbitration seated in Seoul against claims brought by the project owner, a Korean government affiliated company. 
  •   Represented two major Korean construction companies in an LCIA arbitration seated in London against their employer in relation to a power plant dispute in the UAE. 
  •   Represented a major Japanese manufacturer against a Korean company in an ad-hoc arbitration governed by Bangladeshi law in relation to a power plant in Bangladesh. 
  •   Represented a Korean shipbuilding company against claims brought by an Italian buyer in an arbitration seated in Stockholm under the rules of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. 
  •   Represented a Korean shipbuilding company against a Middle Eastern shipping company in an ad-hoc arbitration seated in London governed by English law in relation to ten shipbuilding contracts. 
  •   Represented a Korean company in an ICC arbitration seated in Paris governed by Kazakh law regarding an investment in oil and gas development rights in Kazakhstan. 
  •   Represented a major Korean shipbuilding company in a dispute against a European buyer regarding the construction of a semi-submersible drilling rig, in an LMAA arbitration seated in London. 
  •   Represented a Japanese company against a claim by a major Korean electronics manufacturer for breach under a patent purchase agreement in an ICC arbitration governed by Japanese law seated in Seoul, Korea. 
  •   Represented a Korean manufacturer of ATM machines in an ICDR arbitration seated in Seoul against its exclusive US distributor. 
  •   Represented a US supplier of specialized industrial equipment against a Korean public company in a KCAB arbitration seated in Seoul. 
  •   Represented a Chinese distributor of a Korean cosmetics company in an arbitration seated in Seoul and governed by Korean law under the KCAB International Rules regarding the Korean manufacturer’s termination of the exclusive distribution agreement.
