Bio

Young Joon Mok, who serves as a Chair of the Committee for Social Contribution at Kim & Chang, is an attorney in the firm’s Litigation Practice as well as International Arbitration & Cross-Border Litigation Practice.

Prior to joining Kim & Chang, he had served as Justice of the Constitutional Court of Korea from 2006 to 2012 after a long and distinguished career as a judge from 1983 to 2006. Within this period, he held several different positions such as Professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, Presiding Judge at the Seoul District Court and at the Daegu Court of Appeal, Chief of Staff to the Chief Justice, Assistant Minister for Planning & Coordination, and Vice Minister of the National Court Administration. 

He had also been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eulji Educational Foundation, Member of the Committee for Revising Arbitration Act of Korea, Member of Committee for Judicial Reform of Korea, Member of Permanent Court of Arbitration at Hague, as well as Member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission). He is currently Chair Professor of Korea University, Advisor of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board, Chairman of the Committee for Ethical Management in Hanjin Group, and Chairman of the ESG Committee in CJ Group. 

Mr. Mok attained his LL.B. from Seoul National University College of Law and then attained two LL.M. degrees: one from Seoul National University majoring in criminal procedure, and another from Harvard Law School with a concentration in international commercial arbitration. He completed the coursework for doctor at Cologne University in Germany and earned his S.J.D. from Yonsei University in Korea majoring in international commercial arbitration. He is the author of one of the most authoritative textbooks on commercial arbitration in Korea - “Commercial Arbitration Law,” and has written extensively on this subject. 

Mr. Mok was decorated with Order of Service Merit (Blue Stripes) by the Korean government, was named Lawyer of the Year by the Law Journalists Club, and was awarded the Prize for Legal Thesis by the Korea Legal Center. Recently, he received the Korean Legal Culture Award from the Korean Bar Association.
