[Climate Insight] New Trend: Carbon Neutrality and ESG

2020.12.21

Observing that more than 110 countries, including the European Union, China and Japan, have rushed to declare carbon neutrality* and Joe Biden, the US President-Elect, has campaigned for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 as one of his major policies, it is undeniable that the world is marching toward carbon neutrality.  Joining this trend, South Korea has also declared “2050 Korean Carbon Neutrality Vision” on December 10, 2020, and numerous companies have followed these footsteps.  This clearly shows that carbon neutrality is not only a key for sustainable corporate management, but also a potential powerhouse for new growth in the future.

* “Carbon neutrality” is a concept that by establishing a system to absorb emitted greenhouse gases ("GHGs") (e.g., CO2, etc.), the net emission of GHG would become zero (so called, “net zero”).

Further, global enterprises have been under pressure from their shareholders, potential buyers and investors for ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance).  As relevant stakeholders continue to intensify their demands, how businesses respond to such pressure would have a significant impact on their company’s sustainability.

For details on this new trend in declaration of carbon neutrality and ESG under the paradigm shift to post-carbon society, please refer to the attachment.
