Seung Hwan Jin is a tax attorney/CPA in general tax consulting, real estate & construction, IT, and tax audit and dispute resolution practices of Kim & Chang. He has had over 20 years of experience in advising domestic/foreign companies on a wide range of corporate and business tax issues, including corporate tax planning, tax exemption for foreign investment, and transaction taxes on M&A. One of his key areas of focus is developing strategy to minimize taxes in relation to cross-border M&A transactions.
As a member of the firm’s Real Estate & Construction Practice, Mr. Jin also specializes in providing clients with comprehensive tax advice on the acquisition, holding and disposition of real properties, formation of tax efficient investment vehicles (e.g., ABS SPC, REIT and REF) for the acquisition of real properties, and establishment and operation of Project Finance Vehicles (“PFV”) for developing large tracts of land eligible for special tax benefits. He also assists clients on matters related to corporate income tax, VAT, acquisition tax and withholding tax in relation to real property transactions. Additionally, Mr. Jin provides IT companies (hardware companies, software companies and open-market operators) with planning services for tax optimization as well as tax audit defense services in cases of tax audits and tax appeals.
Prior to working at Kim & Chang, Mr. Jin worked at the Samil PwC and was involved in providing external audit, consulting and corporate income tax filing services.
In addition to working at Kim & Chang, Mr. Jin was a lecturer at the National Tax Officials Training Institute for three years (2008-2010). Since 2017, he has been serving as an outside advisor of BEPS (Base Erosion and Profit Shifting) Center, which is operated by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Korea Institute of Public Finance, and Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Mr. Jin received his B.A. in Business Administration from Seoul National University in 1994. He completed his master’s coursework at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Seoul National University in 1999, and received a master’s degree in professional accounting from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006. He is a certified public accountant and a certified tax accountant in Korea, and he also passed the AICPA exam.
