Bio

Jae Bok Lee is an attorney at Kim & Chang. He practices primarily in shipping, insurance and ship finance.

In both contentious and transaction areas, Mr. Lee has a strong reputation in shipping industries. Having spent two and a half years on working for one of the biggest shipping companies in Korea and the P&I Club as a claim manager, Mr. Lee has had practical experience in dealing with various charterparty disputes including bills of lading, cargo claims, collisions and general marine insurance matters. Mr. Lee’s specialty extends to various ship-involved incident investigations, including collision. In the past years, Mr. Lee has assisted various shipping companies, P&I Clubs and general traders in relation to the issues arising from charterparty contracts, collisions, bills of lading, and sale of goods.

Mr. Lee is now expanding his practice area into ship finance by drafting various finance documents for the delivery of new building and second-hand vessels where the documents are governed by English law. Mr. Lee is currently providing expert assistance on a wide range of ship finance institutions (including export credit lenders and asset management companies etc.), shipowners, shipyards and Korean-based contractors.

Mr. Lee also has particular experience in advising on various Korean shipyards in shipbuilding and offshore disputes and also advising in contract negotiations on new buildings and off-shore projects.

Mr. Lee joined Kim & Chang in 2006, after his six-year practice career with one of the leading P&I Clubs and a shipping law firm in London as a lawyer.

Mr. Lee is also a regular speaker at shipping and maritime seminars at the request of shipowners and marine insurance companies. He also co-authored the Shipping Finance Review 2012/13: Korea section, published by Euromoney Yearbooks (2012).

Mr. Lee studied maritime law at Korea Maritime University, Busan before he went abroad to Cardiff, Wales where he completed his four-year study in law to become a solicitor (lawyer in England and Wales). He is admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.
