Overview

The Energy Practice consists of experts in law, finance, accounting, tax, government regulation, economics and overseas investment with broad experience and expertise in all aspects of conventional and renewable energy, natural resources, power generation and environmental sectors.

Based on deep understanding of the industry accumulated over the course of decades, we provide one-stop service covering the full project lifecycle, including project structuring, development, construction, project financing, cross-border investment and M&A and dispute resolution.  Many of our lawyers and industry experts have experience at international law or accounting firms, and our close cooperation with other global advisors brings a global perspective to our profound understanding of Korean business culture, enabling us to provide world-class services to both Korean and non-Korean clients.

Key Servicesshow

Conventional Energy and Natural Resources Projects

We offer comprehensive advice on all aspects of IPP and other power and natural resources projects involving oil, gas, coal, precious metals, rare earths and minerals and other energy and natural resources.  As the Korean power market decreases reliance on fossil fuels and the energy transition accelerates, we provide bespoke services to help our clients navigate Korea’s rapidly changing regulatory landscape.

Renewable Energy Projects

We provide comprehensive advice on renewable energy power projects including onshore, offshore (fixed-bottom and floating) wind, solar PV, ESS, hydro, waste-to-energy, biomass, tidal, fuel cell and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen and power-to-x projects.  Our services cover all aspects of equity and debt investments in renewable power generation, renewable energy supply chains, sustainable power off-take arrangements (such as indirect PPAs) and achievement of sustainability goals and RE100 participation.

Energy and Natural Resources Joint Ventures and M&A

We advise on energy and natural resource sector joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions in the form of both asset and share sales.  We provide comprehensive advice to our clients throughout the transactions from regulatory and market exploration, deal structuring and due diligence to drafting and negotiation of transaction agreements, acquisition and project financing, and securing necessary governmental permits and approvals.

Domestic and International Policy and Regulations

Our Energy Practice also provides advice on laws and regulations, government policies, and permits and licenses in energy, natural resources and power generation such as government relations, real estate, grid connection, transmission and distribution, construction, negotiations with fishermen and other stakeholders, health and safety, waste, pollution, community relations, tax and environment (including climate change, carbon emission and environmental impact assessment (EIA)) support.  As Korea’s energy industry confronts new opportunities and challenges arising from drastic changes in domestic and international policies, our Energy Practice offers practical advice based on our market-leading experience and familiarity with regulatory bodies in analyzing regulatory intent and prospective changes in laws and regulations to assist our clients in their long-term decision-making.

Domestic and International Litigation and Arbitration

In addition to helping clients to identify and prevent potential disputes that may arise from energy, natural resources and power generation projects, we support clients in litigation and arbitration proceedings in various jurisdictions and assist them with related fact-findings and legal analyses.
